The intersection of Ga. highways 54 and 16 on Shaprsburg’s south side has long been a traffic-clogged area. the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is about the change that with the installation of a mini-roundabout beginning in late June.
The Towns of Turin, Sharpsburg and surrounding areas in eastern Coweta County have experienced significant population growth in recent years. As a result, there is a need to provide operational efficiencies as traffic moves throughout Coweta County, DOT said.
To help resolve the traffic flow issue, DOT is moving forward with installing a mini-roundabout at the intersection of highways 16 and 54.
“It is important to note that we recognize the need for an immediate fix to this heavy traffic area,” said Michael Presley, District Engineer for the West Central District. “We are moving forward with a smaller roundabout that will be quickly constructed and will improve the efficiency of movement through this intersection.”
This is an interim project to address the immediate need as the Georgia DOT and Coweta County continue to work on the long term solution for this intersection, Presley said, adding that the purpose of the proposed project is to improve the operational efficiency of the existing intersection and reduce the frequency and severity of crashes at the intersection and approaches.
The mini roundabout will begin construction in late June and continue for approximately one week, weather permitting.
The scheduled opening date of the project is late June; weather permitting.
