Math teams from three Fayette County high schools swept the team event at the University of West Georgia’s 45th annual Math Day competition, and individual members also swept the 11th-grade division.
Teams from McIntosh High, Starr’s Mill High, and Sandy Creek High schools placed first, second, and third, respectively, in the team event. At the 11th-grade level, students Jaixing Liu of McIntosh High, Alex Powell of Whitewater High, and Nathan Eason of Sandy Creek High finished first, second, and third, respectively, in the individual portion of the competition.
Additionally, individual competitors in the ninth-, 10th- and 12th-grade portions of the competition secured all first-place victories with students also taking other top placements.
At the ninth-grade level, students Anna Hyde of Sandy Creek High and Mark Ni of McIntosh High finished first and second, respectively.
At the tenth-grade level, students James Wong of McIntosh High and Valentin Richter of McIntosh High placed first and second, respectively.
At the calculus, 12th-grade level, students Quinn Knapper of Whitewater High took first place and Joshua Taylor of Starr’s Mill High finished in third place.
A total of 292 students representing 19 high schools and one home school participated in this year’s Math Day competition, which is hosted by the mathematics department at the University of West Georgia.
