Tom Hughey, 73,a long-time resident of Peachtree City, passed away on February 25, 2016.
He was born in Oil City, Pa., where he attended St. Joseph Elementary and St. Joseph High School. He joined the White Fathers of Africa for eight years prior to graduating from Gannon University in Erie, Pa. After selling insurance for the Prudential Company, he became the second firefighter hired by Chief Leach for the Peachtree City Fire Department. He was hired as a firefighter/paramedic and served for 30 years as Fire Training Captain. He developed many training programs after the 9/11 tragedy that included overseeing the construction of the fire department burn building and the building of an underground holding tank for pump testing. He belonged to the Metro Fire Training Officers Association, the local Emergency HazMat Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), and the multi-jurisdictional HazMat Response Team.
Captain Hughey is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda Hughey; children Rob (Danielle) Hughey, Stacey (John) Leblang, Courtney (Jeffrey) Williams, and Stephanie Hughey; sister MaryAnn Bach of Albany, N.Y.; brother Bill Hughey of Conyers; brother John Hughey of Marlton, N.J.; sister Betsy Litzinger of Landing, N.J.; grandchildren Ashleigh and Macey Hughey, Aubrie and Gracie Leblang, Violet Lopez, and Emma Williams.
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Peachtree City. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 2, 2016 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Mowell Funeral Home, Peachtree City Chapel.
