DAR honors WHS students

The James Waldrop Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has honored five Whitewater High students for their demonstration of outstanding citizenship and knowledge of American history.

Zach Byrd, a junior, received the Good Citizen Award. To receive this award, students need to demonstrate leadership, service, dependability, and patriotism. Their teachers and peers select them for the honor because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree. Students receiving the award are invited to participate in an optional scholarship portion of the program.

Nicole Komoscar, a junior, received the Outstanding Work in American History Award. To receive this award, students need to demonstrate leadership, service, dependability, and patriotism, and be selected by their school’s social studies department for high achievement in history.

Jennifer St. Martin, a junior, won the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. Students are assigned a topic, and their essays are judged on historical accuracy, adherence to topic, material organization, interest, originality, grammar, punctuation, and neatness. The winning essay is submitted for judging at the state level for potential advancement to the divisional level, and ultimately the national level.

Two graduating seniors, Madison Horton and Nicole Brown, received the Sara Sams Goza Scholarship for students planning to major in education. The scholarships are worth $500 each.
