Here is this week’s report from state Rep. John Yates:

We were very honored recently in the Georgia House of Representatives when Miss America Betty Cantrell who also holds the title of Miss Georgia came before the House.  I had my picture made with her.  She is very talented and beautiful.

During the past week I was happy that Laurel Brewer invited her Pastor from Savannah to be our Chaplain of the Day in the House of Representatives.  I made the formal invitation to the Speaker of the House.  The citizens of Griffin will recall that Major Dexter Brewer was the former R.O.T.C. instructor at Spalding High several years ago.  Laurel is Dexter’s wife.

We recently had the President of Gordon College visit the Capitol.  He is requesting budget for a new building on campus.  I have worked closely with him for several years.

We are working very diligently in the legislature on the budget and other items as we are well along in our 40 day session.  Many members are already thinking very much about their campaigns for running in the next election.

If you would like to talk to me about the budget or any item of government; I can be reached in my office at Room 217 State Capitol each day at 404-656-5126 and also before 8 p.m. at my home at 770-227-1474.  I can also be reached at [email protected].”

Yates, a Republican, represents District 73 in the Georgia House of Representatives, which includes southeast Fayette County, southwest Henry County and much of Spalding County. At 94 years of age he is the oldest member of the General Assembly and its only World War II veteran.
