Each year the Fayette County NAACP sponsors an eighth-grade essay contest, and recognizes the academic achievement of Fayette’s high school seniors as part of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration held at Sams Auditorium in Fayetteville.

Logan Shanks, an eighth-grader from Bennett’s Mill Middle, is the winner of this year’s essay contest with her essay titled, “Inequality Still Exists.”

Two graduating seniors from each of the county’s five high schools were honored for their academic achievement during the celebration. The students are Brandon James and Destiny Mahone of Fayette County High; Alexandria Pinckney and Demi Tega from McIntosh High; Tajah Damm and Elmer Gonzalez of Sandy Creek High; Miguel Gonzalez and Morgan Knowlton of Starr’s Mill High; and Kevin Romero and Jordan Barnett of Whitewater High.

The students were honored Jan. 18 during the commemorative program that follows the annual parade in Fayetteville.
