The Peachtree City Firefighters Association (PCVFA) got the go-ahead from the Peachtree City Council on Nov. 19 to help celebrate the department’s 50th anniversary in 2016 by raising funds to mechanically restore the original fire engine and create a public safety memorial at the site of the original fire station on Paschall Road.

Fire Chief Joe O’Conor said PCFVA wanted to commemorate the city fire department’s 50th anniversary next July by completing a mechanical restoration of Peachtree City’s original fire truck to operational status and to establish a passive public safety memorial on the site of the original fire station at Ga. Highway 54 and Paschall Road near the cart tunnel.

The original 1949 Chevrolet fire truck is 67 years old and in need of brake work and potentially other repairs. The old fire truck in years past had to be towed on a trailer at events such as parades.

The site of the memorial in past years was established by council as Reed Park in memory of Gerald Reed, the city’s second fire chief.

“It’s city-owned property and a city asset,” O’Conor said of the property.

Neither the restoration of the fire truck or the creation of the park and memorial are budgeted items.

O’Conor said PCVFA hopes to raise the needed funds, whether cash or in-kind, in the next two months.

Donations for the 50th anniversary projects can be mailed to PCVFA at 105 North Peachtree Parkway, Peachtree City GA 30269. For additional information, or to donate through PayPal, visit http://pcfd.com/custom.html?id=21799.
