Giving thanks for online public charter school

This Thanksgiving, I’m giving thanks for my public school. My children, Jordan and Jeriah, attend Georgia Connections Academy, a public, free “virtual” charter school. A virtual public school like GACA is open to any student from any county; it is just all the teachers and students meeting online everyday.

I serve as my children’s “learning coach,” the in-home person who helps keep them accountable for all assignments and diligent in their study. I love being this hands-on in what they are learning. Each child’s learning plan is tailored to their style of learning.

We’re all thriving under this new arrangement. The classroom is anywhere there is the internet. Textbooks, science equipment, a computer are part of the school supplies; field trips are scheduled. Yes, there is even a prom.

So, I’m writing to say “Thank you.” Thank you to the governor, the Georgia Board of Education, and legislature for providing funding for charter education. Thank you to all the parents, educators, students and community leaders who spoke up and said this program was needed for students across the state who are academically gifted, need extra assistance, want or need a flexible schedule, or seek an alternative to the traditional classroom. This school works.
