The rain event that soaked Fayette County over the weekend caused little property damage, but did result in the Flint River leaving its banks on Tuesday.
The Sunday rainfall effectively cut short the Great Georgia Air Show in Peachtree City, with the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels precision flying team limited to just a Saturday demonstration.
The National Weather Service reported that the 48-hour period from mid-Saturday afternoon until mid-Monday afternoon saw approximately 3 inches of rainfall in the Fayette County area.
The rain event resulted in the Flint River flowing above flood-stage on Tuesday and Wednesday.
With flood-stage at 12 feet, the National Weather Service announced that the Flint reached 12 feet, 7 inches on mid-morning Tuesday and was expected to rise to more than 13 feet later in the day and into Wednesday morning.
Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services Divison Chief Pete Nelms said an office park on Habersham Drive in Fayetteville had a 7-foot retaining wall that was beginning to collapse. Other than that, there were a few reports of flooding in crawl spaces and there was one instance of a tree hitting a power line on Grant Road in south Fayette County, Nelms said.
Peachtree City Fire Rescue spokesman Ron Mundy on Monday afternoon said the city had not been notified of anyone requesting assistance from flooding. That said, Mundy noted that there were areas of rising water in the low-lying Tinsley Mill residential development off Flat Creek Road.
