Roy Cassell passed away gently in his sleep the morning of Tuesday, September 29, 2015, after several years with Alzheimer’s disease. He had been living with his daughter for the past year and will truly be missed. Mr. Cassell was one of 10 children, born and raised in Greenbank, W. Va. He achieved his BS and MS degrees from the University of West Virginia. His education was interrupted by his service in the U.S. Navy on a minesweeper in World War II, and his marriage to Helen, also of West Virginia, followed by the birth of their daughter.

Several years later, he completed his MS degree, and several years after that completed his Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin. He always said he would have been a full-time student if he could. In his early career, he worked in the Extension Service and also with 4-H clubs, where he accompanied and chaperoned a 4-H group to Europe for a month. His mid-career was spent at the University of Maryland, followed by later work and retirement from the Department of Agriculture. He was active in the Lions Club and in his community with the Homeowner’s Association.

His wife preceded him in death by 7 years and surely he will be overjoyed to again be united with his beloved. He is survived by his sister Maxine, of North Carolina, daughter, Phoebe, granddaughter Kym, and 3 great-grandchildren Tristan, Piper and Chaz, all of Georgia, as well as several nephews and nieces.

A funeral service will take place Monday, October 5, 2015, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Gardens, Tyrone. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
