With his loving wife Jean of over 45 years by his side, John Paul Gossett, Jr., passed away at Gentiva Hospice Care in Columbus, Ga. John was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and after a long battle he peacefully slipped away on the afternoon of August, 28, 2015.
John was born May 2, 1943 in Macon, Ga. while his parents were enroute from Jacksonville, Fla. to Atlanta, Ga. He attended Georgia Military Academy and graduated from Druid Hills High school in 1961. He lived in the Atlanta area virtually all of his life and has resided in Fayetteville since 1994.
John worked at the Chevrolet Dealership in Union City for a decade. He also worked as mortgage loan officer and later began his own award/trophy business in the old train depot located in Fairburn, Ga. He had a passion for trains and loved to hear the train come through as he worked. John was very active in the Fairburn and Fayette communities including serving as Rotary Club president. All of his life, John had a love for his family and his pets. You could always find him in the yard with one of his companions. He also had an affinity for fixing and improving things, as well as owning and restoring old cars. He would rather drive his 1963 “no frills” Ford than his newer “loaded” Ford any day of the week!
John was preceded in death by his mother, Susie Barber Gossett, his father, John Paul Gossett Sr., and his son Payton Ashley Gossett.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Jeffords Gossett, his daughter, Margaret Marie Gossett, his sons John Paul Gossett III and Justin Cory Gossett, his grandsons John Paul Gossett IV and William Shipman Gossett, along with his granddaughter Peyton Avery Gossett.
A visitation for John was held at Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home (180 Jeff Davis Drive, Fayetteville, Ga. 30214) from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2015.
John will be laid to rest at Camp Memorial Park (1095 Ga. Highway 54, Fayetteville, Ga. 30214) at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2015.
