Dieter Schmidt, 75, of Fayetteville died peacefully in his sleep on June 6, 2015.
He was born in Lodz, Poland on June 4, 1940. When he was 16, he immigrated to the United States, arriving in Ticonderoga, N.Y. and formed a new circle of lifelong friends. After serving in the United States Air Force, he became a mechanic for Delta Air Lines where he worked for 29 years. He also developed skills in carpentry work, as well as being an all-around handyman. He repeatedly used these skills and his fine eye for his family, friends and church. Dieter was a member of the Inman United Methodist Church, the Inman Men’s Club and served as a Trustee of the church. He was also an active member of the Ticonderoga Alumni Association. He was a very active member of the Inman Golf Association and enjoyed the friendships he developed with these buddies. He enjoyed working in his garden.
Dieter is survived by his wife of 51-1/2 years, Miriam; his son Kurt Schmidt; his daughters Robynne and Daryl Ferguson and Cathy Herron; and his three grandchildren, Cory and Justin Schmidt and Kayla Herron, many nieces and nephews and numerous cousins living in Germany.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Margita Schulz.
A memorial service will be held at Inman United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on June 12, 2015, with Dr. Rev. Royeese Stowe and Rev. Jim Hanna officiating. The family will receive friends beginning one hour before the service at the church.
