Roundabouts are wasteful spending

Its been over a year since The Citizen reported anything on the proposed roundabouts on Ga. Highway 92 at Seay Road and Antioch Road, so perhaps an update in needed.

At that time, it was only for a feasibility study, but now the two projects (ID 0009971 and 0009972) are already moving to surveys and notifications of property acquisition, seemingly without further Fayette County approval.

On top of this, the projects have now ballooned in scope from simple roundabouts to rerouting Harp Road through several properties to Antioch Road and rerouting Antioch Road through church property so it is further south than its current location.

The GDOT website states that the cost estimates for all this are just shy of $6 million to alleviate traffic problems that only occur for short periods of time on Sundays and slow the traffic along this stretch of Hwy. 92 all the rest of the week.

The design of the roundabout will slow traffic down to 25-35 mph for cars and even more for loaded trucks and school buses making the tight the turn.

County commissioners seem to be supporting the project because the state is picking up the whole cost of the project, but only if roundabouts are used. Other solutions will be on the county’s dime.

However, the county commissioners should remember that they were voted into office because prior commissioners were supporting projects the public did not want or cost too much vs. the benefit gained, and history tends to repeat itself.

On Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at Harp’s Crossing Baptist Church, 1183 Hwy. 92 S. Fayetteville, GA 30215, the Georgia Department of Transportation will hold a public information open house. Come and see how the state is wasting taxpayer money.

Less costly solutions to the traffic coming from these side roads onto Hwy. 92 would be simply to lower the speed limit and regularly run radar to catch speeders. This solution works quite well at other intersections along Hwy. 92.
