Staff with the Fayette County School System said goodbye to Bob Todd at an informal event held Dec. 8 at the Lafayette Education Center. Todd at the end of December will conclude nearly three decades of service in various capacities with the school system and Board of Education.
Todd served on the school board from 1996-1999 and again for another two terms beginning in 2007.
Prior to serving in an elected capacity, Todd served as the Fayette school system’s Director of Secondary Education from 1980-1994.
Todd, at times, has been no stranger to controversy, nor did he shy away from it while serving on the school board. It was only a handful of years ago that Todd, along with now-Chairman Marion Key, customarily engaged in verbal exchanges with two former school board members over issues that largely surrounded school system finances.
Todd and Key, for example, maintained for years that the school system should be more fiscally conservative and should have a reserve fund, for which expenditures would require board approval. That change was recently instituted.
Todd began his career in education as a teacher and counselor in Thomson in 1958 before taking the position as Dean of Boys at Waycross High School. He worked with the Ga. Dept. of Education from 1965-1969 as Director of Student Personnel Services in Area Vocational Technical Schools and as guidance counseling and testing consultant.
Prior to moving to Fayette County in 1980, Todd held several positions with the Savannah-Chatham County School System.
