The Higher Ground Group, comprised of an assembly of four long-time Atlanta faith leaders who share common experiences and lead positive change, will travel to Newnan in November to spark new ideas and offer fresh perspectives on issues facing the metro area, nation and world.
Higher Ground will hold a discussion panel in the sanctuary of Newnan Presbyterian Church, 38 Greenville St., Newnan, on Thursday, Nov. 6 from 7 – 8 p.m. Groups from all faith institutions and walks of life are encouraged to attend.
Higher Ground was born from a unique relationship between four long-time Atlanta faith leaders: the Rev. Joanna Adams, pastor emerita of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, Morningside and Trinity Presbyterian churches; Imam Plemon El-Amin, Imam emeritus of the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam; the Rev. Joe Roberts, pastor emeritus of Ebenezer Baptist Church; and Rabbi Alvin Sugarman, senior rabbi emeritus of The Temple. Though they come from different faith backgrounds, the founders of Higher Ground share common experiences and legacies built as leading voices for their congregations and for positive change in their communities.
“Now together, Higher Ground’s leaders speak with a distinctive, collective voice,” a spokesperson said, “helping to raise awareness and to inspire action on key issues affecting the greater Atlanta community to effect positive change. Through a weekly blog, an active social media campaign, and interactive special event panels where the colleagues hold conversations with their inspired crowds, this foursome is truly inspiring positive change.”
The group discusses relevant conversational topics such as social justice, racial equality, homelessness and discrimination, while also leading the way for the next generation to make their communities a better place through civic and social actions.
Faith-based but not faith-biased, the Higher Ground Group examines the issues and challenges of today and demonstrates that humanity can work together despite differences to create a stronger community.
