Louis Fuertes Boynton (Lou) died peacefully on April 14, 2014 in Atlanta, Ga. after a year of declining health. He was born on July 19, 1933 in Trumansburg, N.Y.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents Damon and Mary Fuertes Boynton.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Frances Taraila Boynton; his four children, Louis Fuertes Boynton II, Carol Mastin, Timothy Boynton, Christine Boynton; his six grandchildren, Sophie Boynton, Mary Mastin, Dallas Mastin, Jacob Boynton Welch, Sara Welch, and Damon Boynton; and his two sisters, Katherine Payne and Maria Boynton.
Louis was stationed at Dover Air Force Base from 1953 to 1957. His greatest passion was engines. He began with automobiles: first, a Model A, as a teenager and over his lifetime, Corvettes and Porches. He loved taking engines apart and putting them back together again. He spent much time at NASCAR races with his friends and family rooting for his favorites to win. This transitioned into a love of airplane mechanics. He earned his mechanic’s license at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida. Louis was a longtime airplane technical manager for Pan American Airways, Butler aviation, and later retiring with Northwest Airlines. He was the station manager in Tehran during the fall of the Shah and managed the transition of his team out of the country. Louis also loved Jazz music from his early years standing at the back of Birdland in New York City listening to Dizzy Gillespie to the end of his days in his room marveling at the sound of CD roms.
Louis was an active member of the NRA. He was also an avid athlete all his life. He loved the ocean. He was one of the first adult windsurfers in Kailua Bay, Oahu. He shared his love of the ocean with many young men, teaching them how to surf off of Flat Island. Later, he sailed in and around Jones Beach. When landlocked he ran marathons, most notably five New York Marathons.
There will be a memorial service held for him this fall in Delaware.
