Piedmont Fayette Hospital offers graduate level pastoral care training known as clinical pastoral education (CPE) for community members and clergy interested in learning more about spiritual care.
As part of the program, students of all faiths minister to people in intimate and sometimes critical situations while being supervised.
Over the course of five months, the CPE students will engage with patients in a variety of settings including hospitals, prisons and hospice facilities.
The CPE program, which is offered twice a year at both Piedmont Fayette and Piedmont Henry, gives students an opportunity to view circumstances from a different perspective, gain new insights about themselves, and to understand the nature of human relationships and faith, especially as it applies in a hospital type setting. Students must commit to the five-month program in order to complete a unit of CPE training, which is offered at Piedmont Fayette by Dr. Steve Austin, chaplain at Piedmont Henry Hospital and CPE supervisor.
Austin is certified by the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy.
Enrollment in Piedmont Fayette Hospital’s CPE program is limited to seven students per class.
