The Fayette County Band Boosters are proud to announce that the 46th annual Miss Pride of Fayette County Pageant, is today and March 8. All Fayette County girls from three years of age through 12th grade are eligible to participate. This year the winner of the high school division will be awarded a $1,500 scholarship and the first runner up will win a $500 scholarship. The scholarship is being donated this year by Dr. Scott T. McPherson, DDS, Peachtree City Orthodontics and Big Frog.
The winners will participate in several parades and make some public apperances during her reign. Applications will be accepted until March 3. The pageant has been a fundraiser for the Fayette County Band since 1969. Applications are available at www.missprideoffayettecounty.com.

The Metro South Regional Transition Council, an eight county collaborative (including Fayette) will host a Life After High School Conference and Expo for students with disabilities and their families today. An AARP Drivers Safety Class is today at the Powell Library on Hospital Road in Newnan. The class will teach defensive driving techniques and may just save you a pretty penny on car insurance! Run for the Gold is today at Oak Grove Elementary School. The warm-up begins at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K uns begin at 8 a.m., while the one mile walk steps off at 8:05 p.m.
All 5K run and 1-mile run/walk participants will receive a cotton T-shirt. 5K awards will be given to the top three male/female winners of each age group. Top male/female per grade level will receive awards for the one mile, as well as overall and masters. For more information, visit oges.org.
Our Genealogy Group will hold its annual All Day Workshop for Beginners from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This genealogy workshop for beginners is free, but you must RSVP. The workshop will be held at Clayton State University in room UC265 of the James M. Baker University Center. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The first half of the day will feature speakers. After lunch the workshop will head across the hall to the Clayton State Library to utilize the free genealogy programs offered by the University. Attendees will also learn which of the programs are available to use free at home via the University website.
Piedmont Fayette Hospital will participate in an emergency management exercise today from 4 to 8 p.m. on the campus of Piedmont Fayette Hospital.
During the drill emergency personnel will respond as in a real emergency. Traffic delays can be expected in the proximity of the Piedmont Fayette campus but the exercise will not affect patient/visitor access to hospital services, access to the hospital’s main entrances or surrounding medical offices. Public access to emergency medical care will be a priority for Piedmont Fayette and first responders participating in the drill.

Tommy Alden will present “Camellias A to Z” today at 7 p.m. at the Coweta County Extension Office.
Alden has had a life-long interest in camellias. At an early age he began helping his father make grafts from scions obtained from Dave Strother’s collection at Massee Lane. Alden is past president of the Middle Georgia Camellia Society and is currently chairman of the American Camellia Society’s Massee Lane Garden Council. He is also an active camellia show judge.

A “Call For Volunteers” meeting for Alzheimer’s walk is today at 10 a.m at McIntosh Place in Peachtree City, near the Senior Services Gathering Place. Robert J. Burch Elementary will be having its fourth annual Burch Bear Tracks today at 8 a.m. and includes Tot Trot, Mile Fun Run, and a 5K race. The primary goal for this event is to promote health and wellness through fitness as well as raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in their effort to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. The secondary goal is to fund Burch’s running club in which hundreds of students participate.
