Lady Panthers, Lady Tigers advance in state hoops tourney

Fayette teams are 2-for-2 after the first night of the GHSA state basketball tournament.

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers advanced to the round of 16 with a 39-38 win Friday over Grovetown. The game was tied at the end of the first and third quarters, and Starr’s Mill led by two at halftime.

The Lady Panthers are back on the road for the second round to face an Effingham County team that reached the state semifinals last season. Effingham County, from Region 3-AAAAA cruised past Bainbridge 66-41 in its first-round game.

The Fayette County Lady Tigers rolled over Heritage-Catoosa by a 68-31 score. Thanks to Grady’s 55-51 victory over Chestatee, Fayette County gets a home games in the second round due to Grady being the fourth-seeded team from Region 6-AAAA.

The other local girls’ team in the tournament, the Sandy Creek Lady Patriots, is scheduled to play at River Ridge Saturday.
