Local teams in good shape as hoops season is ending

With last week’s snow storm making the schedule exceptionally crowded for the final week of the regular season, several local varsity basketball teams are in excellent position with the region tournaments only a few days away.
The Georgia High School Association released the updated region standings early Tuesday morning, after many teams played makeup games Monday night and have two or three left to play this week.

The Whitewater Wildcats lead Region 4-AAAAA with a 10-2 record, followed by Drew (11-3), McIntosh (9-3) and Creekside (7-3). As of Tuesday morning, Whitewater and McIntosh had identical 15-7 overall records.
Rounding out the region standings are Mundy’s Mill, Union Grove, Mt. Zion, Starr’s Mill, Forest Park, Northgate and Ola.
The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers, 15-5 overall, are currently in third place with a 9-2 region record, trailing Forest Park (12-1) and Drew (11-1). Mt. Zion (8-4) is fourth, followed by Whitewater (6-5) and McIntosh (6-6).

In Region 5-AAAA, Alexander is 11-0 with Fayette County in second place at 8-2. Sandy Creek and Carrollton are tied for third at 6-4, followed by LaGrange, Shaw, Troup and Columbus. The Tigers’ overall record is 16-5 and the Patriots are 15-6.
The Fayette County Lady Tigers are also second in the region at 8-2, with Columbus leading the way at 11-0. Carrollton (7-3) is third and Sandy Creek (6-4) is fourth. Fayette County is 14-7 overall and ranked among the state’s top ten AAAA teams, as is the boys’ squad.

Landmark is tied for third in Region 5-A with Holy Innocents’ at 7-1. Greenforest is 9-0 and Mt. Vernon is 7-0. Pace Academy, Galloway, ELCA, W.D. Mohammed, Our Lady of Mercy, Paideia, Strong Rock and AIS round out the region standings. Landmark is 17-3 overall.
Holy Innocents’ is the leader in the girls’ region standings at 8-0, followed by Paideia, Greenforest, ELCA and Pace Academy. OLM is sixth at 4-3 and 11-10 overall. After Galloway and AIS, Landmark is ninth, followed by Strong Rock, Mt. Vernon and W.D. Mohammed.
Tuesday night’s scheduled games included McIntosh at Starr’s Mill, Creekside at Whitewater, Fayette County at Shaw, Sandy Creek at Carrollton, Pace Academy at Landmark and Our Lady of Mercy at ELCA.

A few makeup games are on tap for tonight because of last week’s snow storm. Starr’s Mill travels to Northgate, while Fayette County hosts LaGrange and Sandy Creek plays at home against Shaw. Starr’s Mill plays at Whitewater tomorrow night.
Friday’s games include Fayette Co. at Alexander,Columbus at Sandy Creek, Mt. Vernon at Landmark and Our Lady of Mercy at Pace.

The Region 4-AAAAA tournament is set to begin Saturday, along with final regular-season games such as Fayette County at Carrollton, Troup at Sandy Creek and ELCA at Landmark. The other region tournaments start early next week.
