The Fayette County School System is monitoring what is now forecast as a winter storm warning expected to hit sometime Tuesday. While conditions might change, the school system at 3 p.m. announced that extra-curricular activities planned for Tuesday evening have been cancelled.
“Our current plan is to have a regular school day tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan. 28) based on information we have received from Fayette County Emergency Services and the National Weather Service in Peachtree City,” said school system spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach. “However, due to the possibility of precipitation beginning midday and freezing temperatures, all extra-curricular activities are cancelled for Tuesday evening.”
There will be a briefing with Fayette Emergency Services at 9 a.m. in the morning to get an update on the weather situation. A decision to close or delay the opening of school for Wednesday will be made after the briefing, Berry-Dreisbach said.
Berry-Dreisbach said the school system is continuing to monitor weather reports. Parents and staff will be notified as soon as possible of any significant changes that would impact school closures for tomorrow.
The National Weather Service Monday afternoon issued a winter storm warning for south metro Atlanta, including Fayette and Coweta counties.
The warning noted the expectation of below freezing temperatures Tuesday with accumulation of 1-2 inches or more of sleet and snow. Ice is expected to form on sidewalks and walkways.
