It’s holiday season: Time to embrace military families

Dear citizens of Fayette County,

“The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.”

This quote is often attributed to George Washington. Unfortunately, he didn’t actually say it, and further research has not divulged the name of the wise person who did. But no matter, it does ring true.

What George Washington actually said was, “I have good authority for saying, that however high the Men’s pay may appear, it is barely sufficient in the present scarcity and dearness of all kinds of goods, to keep them in Cloaths, much less afford support to their Families.”

This may not be as eloquent as the first quote, but it expresses the same sentiment. Our soldiers and their families have sacrificed and toiled long and hard for us and our way of life for over 12 years.

We go through our daily lives with little reminder, other than the occasional mention on the nightly news, that we are still at war and men and women are still in harm’s way and children and wives are still waiting and praying for their loved ones to come home safely.

I have endeavored, for those same 12 years, with your help, to support those more than worthy families and show the writer of that first quote that those who heed the call in the future will see that our service members and their families were not only taken care of, but embraced and rewarded for their sacrifice.

While many service members are coming home, and will spend this Christmas with their families, there are many more who are still serving overseas and in harm’s way. Their families must not be forgotten.

Please, once again, consider helping me to provide the merriest of Christmases to these families. And join me in praying that this, finally, will be the last year they need our help.

Before I offer specifics on how you can help, I want to say that 100 percent of your contribution goes to the families we serve. They’ve given much more than 100 percent; it’s the least we can do!

Embracing Military Families has an “all volunteer” staff, so you are assured that every dime you donate goes directly to the families we so humbly serve. It is our honor and pleasure to give back to these so richly deserving families.

That said, we are in need of new toys, gift cards, cash and generous people who can find it in their hearts to adopt a family for Christmas. You can contact me at 770-487-0672 for more information and I thank you, in advance, for helping me to not only help, but to honor these most deserving families.
