ELCA 35, Landmark 0: It was expected by many to be a down-to-the-wire fight for the Region 5-A crown. Indeed, up to a week ago, it was projected to be a matchup of unbeaten teams.
But after losing by one point last week to Holy Innocents, the Landmark War Eagles hosted the top-ranked Chargers of Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, and the defending state champions lived up to their billing.
Racing to a 21-0 lead before the end of the first quarter and never looking back, the Chargers cruised to victory and finished the regular season with a 10-0 record. Landmark fell to 8-2.
First-round state playoff matchups will not be known until the Class A Private power rankings are revealed early next week, at which time the top 16 teams will be inserted into the playoff bracket. But after being ranked #3 going into the ELCA game, the War Eagles will almost certainly host their first-round playoff game after a week off.
Our Lady of Mercy 41, Strong Rock 7: The Bobcats finished the regular season at 5-5 and , after coming into this game at #11 in the GHSA power rankings, await their status for the Class A Private state playoffs.
McIntosh 77, Drew 56: The Chiefs (8-2) will play a team from Region 2-AAAAA in the first round of the state playoffs, possibly at home.
Whitewater 36, Union Grove 13: The Wildcats (7-3) will open the state playoffs on the road against a team from Region 2-AAAAA.
Starr’s Mill 31, Forest Park 20: The Panthers wrapped up their 2013 season with a 4-6 record.
Alexander 44, Fayette County 0: The Tigers’ season has come to a close with a record of 1-9.
Sandy Creek closes out Region 5-AAAA play Saturday afternoon on the road against last-place Columbus. The Patriots have already clinched the top spot in the region and will host the fourth-place team from Region 7-AAAA next week.
