Fayette County Commission Chairman Steve Brown has been selected to receive a Democracy Award from Common Cause Georgia.

Brown is being recognized for his support of efforts to reform ethics at the state government level, officials said.

Common Cause Georgia advertises itself as a “statewide non-partisan cross-ideology education and advocacy watchdog group dedicated to openness, accountability and ethics in government.”

At Brown’s urging, the commission adopted a resolution encouraging local legislators to help pass meaningful ethics legislation during the 2013 general assembly.

Brown will be presented with the award at a reception Nov. 10.

Fayette County Commissioner David Barlow noted that the award is significant because Brown “exemplified what ethics should be in local government.”

Brown was elected to the county commission in 2010 and was appointed chairman in January 2013. He previously served as mayor of Peachtree City.
