The Sandy Creek Patriots (3-0-1, 1-0) broke the 50-point barrier for the third straight game, winning 54-19 over the Fayette County Tigers (0-4, 0-1) in a Region 5-AAAA battle in Fayetteville.
After putting up 55 points against Newnan and 54 against East Coweta, the Patriots are averaging 47.5 points per contest and now have a 43-game regular-season unbeaten streak.
The game started out as a shootout on both sides. Sandy Creek’s Cole Garvin threw first-quarter touchdown passes to Jeremiah Relaford and Demarre Kitt, while Fayette County’s Daveion Nash connected with Milan Astin for a score. Jollyce Myrick’s 13-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter tied the game at 12.
From there, the Patriots reeled off 35 unanswered points to take control. Delvin Weems scored on runs of 40 and 2 yards, and a fumble recovery in the end zone made it a 33-12 score just before halftime.
Nick Toney took the ball in for a score from a yard out late in the third quarter, and after a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Weems took the handoff and made a nifty move in the backfield to elude a would-be tackler before sprinting down the left sideline for his third touchdown of the game.
The Tigers hit on a big play late in the third, as Nash connected with Ashton Jackson on a 91-yard scoring pass. But Sandy Creek drove back down the field in less than 90 seconds, with Eric Swinney breaking free for a 47-yard touchdown run that turned out to be the final score of the game. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock under the 30-point rule.
Sandy Creek will host Troup Friday, while Fayette County travels to Carrollton.
McIntosh 28, Mundy’s Mill 27: The Chiefs (5-0, 2-0) maintained their perfect record and matched their 2012 win total with a win at Twelve Oaks Stadium in Clayton County.
Trailing 21-7 at halftime, McIntosh scored three second-half touchdowns to take the lead, then blocked the extra point attempt that would have tied the game after a Mundy’s Mill touchdown.
Quarterback Andrew Johnson ran for two scores and threw touchdown passes to Victor Nguyen and Duke Kinamon. The Chiefs had 328 yards of offense in the game. After a bye this week, they will host Whitewater Oct. 11.
Drew 35, Starr’s Mill 34: The Panthers (2-3, 1-1) overcame a 28-0 third-quarter deficit and had a chance to win in the final minute but fell just short.
The comeback started with two touchdowns by John Smith, who ran for 119 yards in the game, and Melvin Broomfield scored on a return with five seconds left in the third period to cut the lead to seven.
Starr’s Mill tied the game on Smith’s 32-yard scoring run with 4:45 to play, but Drew returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. Kyle Moseley threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Dion Munerlyn with 26 seconds left, and the Panthers went for the win via a two-point conversion, but the running attempt failed.
The Panthers will host Creekside Friday.
Landmark 52, Mt. Vernon 19: The War Eagles (5-0, 1-0) opened Region 5-A play with a Saturday road game and had little trouble, as six different players scored.
Stockton McGuire threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns while running for another score in only a half. Two of those scoring passes were to Aaron Burt and the other was to Sam Dobbs.
Lofton Tidwell scored on a fumble recovery and a third-quarter toss sweep, while Titus Creamer returned a first-half interception for a touchdown. Darius Smith scored his sixth rushing touchdown of the season and recorded more than 200 all-purpose yards.
The War Eagles host the Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats in a region game Friday.
Whitewater 35, Forest Park 8: The Wildcats (4-1, 2-0) took the field Thursday at Southern Crescent Stadium in Clayton County and won their fourth straight. They will travel Friday to Northgate.
Our Lady of Mercy 22, Pace Academy 14: The Bobcats (1-3, 1-0) burst into the win column in their first Region 5-A contest of the season and will play this Friday at Landmark.
