On Sunday, Sept. 8 members of Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church traveled from Sharpsburg to Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Atlanta to participate in a weekly, community-wide feeding program administered by Trinity Table.
Cokes Chapel congregants, members of LaGrange District United Methodist Men, and a group known as the Christian Craftsmen assembled 1,200 sandwiches to accompany to-go lunches for the homeless and hungry. These sack lunches are in addition to the meal of spaghetti, sauce, salad, and bread that the church served on Sunday morning.
Annually, more than 2,000 people pass through the doors of Trinity United Methodist in search of food. Without the support of area churches and other houses of worship many would go hungry.
“We are keenly aware that as we prepare the lunches, hunger continues to be a major concern for many in the community,” said Cokes Chapel Pastor Mark Jordan, “This is why we are committed as a church family to doing what we can to help ease suffering.”
Jordan went on to say an estimated 200-plus people benefited from the day’s event, some of whom were children. “It is heartbreaking to know that children are among those who are hungry. Many of us take for granted having food to eat; we shouldn’t,” Jordan said.
Sunday’s event is one of several hunger relief programs supported by Cokes Chapel United Methodist. The church also supports One Roof Outreach, Coweta Community Food Pantry, as well as food ministries in Luthersville and Hogansville as a part of its local missions program.
Cokes Chapel also works to help relieve hunger across the world. Earlier this year the church hosted a “Stop Hunger Now!” packaging event that prepared more than 31,300 high-protein meals for international hunger relief.
“At Cokes Chapel United Methodist, we take seriously the Bible’s admonition to care for those who are the least, the last and the lost. One simple way to demonstrate the love of Christ is by meeting some of even the simplest needs of the people around us,” Jordan concluded.
