The War Eagles of Landmark Christian School traveled to Savannah and picked up a hard-fought road win, 30-22 over Calvary Day School’s Cavaliers last night in their 2013 season opener.
Landmark took a 20-14 lead into the locker room at halftime, and the score did not change in the third quarter.
The Landmark defense set up what proved to be the winning score with just over nine minutes to play. On third-and-20, a Cavalier pass was intercepted at midfield by Nolan Bryant, who returned the ball to the Calvary Day 23. Stockton McGuire’s 34-yard field goal put the War Eagles up by nine with 7:14 to play.
The War Eagle defense stepped up again on the ensuing drive, holding Calvary Day on fourth down to get the ball back. The team capitalized as Darius Smith scored on a long touchdown run for a 30-14 advantage with just over five minutes left.
The Cavaliers scored a touchdown and two-point conversion with 25 seconds to play, but Landmark recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.
The War Eagles hit the road again next Friday with a game at Athens Christian.
