Thanks to the community’s generosity, 50 kids will start school this year with high-quality backpacks stocked with school supplies.

The effort comes as part of the “Shop With a Sheriff” program deployed by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

This year, the backpacks are being distributed to Fayetteville Elementary School on Hood Avenue, where the school counselor can distribute the backpacks to the students who are most in need, said Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb.

The backpack and school supply program is in its second year as an offshoot of the annual “Shop With a Sheriff” Christmas campaign that provides Christmas gifts for a number of children and their families through a special shopping trip for a Christmas they might not otherwise have.

The Christmas arm of “Shop With a Sheriff” is now in its seventh year of operation in Fayette County as a registered non-profit organization.
