Herbert Eugene Galloway Jr. of Peachtree City, Ga., passed away June 22, 2013.
Born October 19, 1920 in Maxton, N.C.
He was preceded by his wife of 70 years, Josie O. Galloway.
Survived by his son Herbert Eugene Galloway III and his wife Margaret Holmes Galloway of Raleigh, N.C., daughter Linda Lee Connell and granddaughter Laura Connell Bondoc and her husband Eric Bondoc of Jacksonville, Fla.
Herbert (Herby) moved to Atlanta, Ga. in 1942 to become the 20th person to work with the CAA (FAA) Air Route Traffic Control Center in the original Atlanta airport control tower. Six months later he married Josie Odom, of Red Springs, N.C., and brought her back to Atlanta. In 1949 moved to Cascade Heights, SW Atlanta to their first home and in 1968 moved again to Peachtree City, Ga. to be closer to FAA Center when it moved to Hampton, Ga. Herbert retired with the FAA in 1975 with a final title of Asst. Chief of the Center.
History nuggets of Herbert’s full life:
Herby’s first airplane ride was in a Ford Tri-Motor, and he learned to fly at the Maxton, N.C. airfield (grass runway and now a tilled field). Across the road from the field is Maxton’s Cemetery where Herby will join his wife Josie, father and mother.
He earned his pilot license in 1939 in Fayetteville, N.C., also a degree at Presbyterian Jr. College. Both were required to be hired as an Air Traffic Controller in early 1942.
Herby had two offers of employment: train flyers for the U. S. Army Air Corps or go with the CAA (FAA) as an air traffic controller. He chose the CAA because it paid $50 more a month.
He and Josie were founding members of the Audubon Forest Methodist Church of Cascade Heights Atlanta, Ga. which first held services in the Atlanta Adams Park Library basement in the early 1950ís.
Watching the Atlanta Braves and playing Bridge were their favorite pass times and Herby loved to “no trump.”
And finally, Josie and Herby learned ball room dancing in Peachtree City and were “the couple” on the dance floor. May they now dance forever!
