Some parents of Fayette County believe there is a future inner city school right near Tyrone, Ga. Although Sandy Creek High School has had many academic and athletic successes, lately student behavior at Sandy Creek has led us to believe that the successes of the past are overshadowing the future of this once great high school.
My child has attended Sandy Creek and has indicated to me that the student behavior is getting out of control. Fights, student disruptions in class, back-talking teachers, leaving class whenever they want, electronic devices, throwing things in class, profanity towards teachers and bullying are quite common now, where that was not the case years ago, according to my child.
I am very close to my children and love to hear them talk about their daily routine and how they are doing at school only to hear how great the teachers are and how disruptive many students can be.
My child can’t even complete assignments because of the disruptive students. I inquire, “What does the teacher do?”
My child responds, “I was sitting in one class where a disruptive student was out of control. The teacher sent the student out and on the way out, the disruption continued, and the disruptive student responded by saying, ‘Nothing will happen to me. I have [school official]; she’s my friend.’”
Later, I realized that my child was referring to [an administrator] at Sandy Creek.
My child has also disclosed to me that certain athletes get away with all but murder because they are under the care of [another school administrator].
My question is this: What is going on at Sandy Creek? Why is the administration so lax in doing a single thing like maintaining discipline so our children can learn? Are our children learning as much as they could without all the disruptions in classes and fights in the hallways?
Why are higher authorities allowing the administration at Sandy Creek to get away with allowing assistant principals to do nothing? And most importantly, what is going to happen at Sandy Creek if the present trend continues?
We moved to Fayette County for the excellent reputation that Fayette County schools had, but now I realize that the reputation does not apply at Sandy Creek anymore. I am concerned about Sandy Creek’s new reputation, the possibility of my child’s chance at HOPE scholarship and property values in the community where we reside.
