Inez Stallard Meade, 93, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Mullens, West Va., passed away on April 20, 2013.

Born in Scott County, Va., Mrs. Meade was the daughter of the late Orban H. and Arlie Emily Compton Stallard.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, George W. Meade; a sister and brother-in-law Bernice and Jack Burchfield; brothers Glenn and Fred Stallard and step-mother Georgia Stallard.

Mrs. Meade grew up in the Twin springs Community of Scott County and walked ten miles round trip each day to earn her degree from Nickelsville High School. She also received a degree in education from Radford College and was employed as a teacher in Virginia for six years before moving to West Virginia. While living in West Virginia, She worked as a social worker for twenty-six years for the Department of Human Services during which time she helped to initiate a welfare work program and served as director of Wonder House, a work program for the handicapped. She often assisted physicians when problems arose, and one prominent doctor stated that “Mrs. Meade was willing, knowledgeable and able to solve many problems.”

Prior to her move to Atlanta twelve years ago, Mrs. Meade was an active member of First Methodist Church in Mullens and worked tirelessly in local, state and national elections. She also served as treasurer for the garden club for many years and was well known for her beautiful award-winning yard and garden. Her other interests included quilting, knitting and word search puzzles.

Mrs. Meade is survived by her loving and faithful son Bill Meade of Atlanta; devoted sister and brother-in-law Galola and Roy Kendrick of Johnson City, Tenn.; special brother and sister-in-law Jack and Florence Stallard of Nickelsville; dear sisters-in-law Dorothy Stallard and Elizabeth Stallard and treasured nieces and nephews Jessie Bowser (Lee), Beth Hall (Bill), Janice Houck (Roger), Timmy Stallard and Tommy Stallard, one great-niece, two great-nephews and two great-great-nephews.

The family would like to extend grateful appreciation to Christi Ivester, special caregiver and dear friend.

A memorial service for Mrs. Meade will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Nickelsville United Methodist Church, Nickelsville, Va. Reverend Steve Collins will officiate. Interment will follow in Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va.
