National Heights Baptist Church will host a “Shred Day” on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 103 Old Norton Road, Fayetteville.
There will be no charge to the public for shredding but donations will be accepted. The church has hired Shred-It, one of Georgia’s largest professional shredding companies, to manage the shredding.
Documents and papers acceptable for shredding include outdated or sensitive information such as medical and financial records, credit card statements, cancelled checks, insurance forms, old tax returns, and any other personal documents.
Staples or paperclips do not have to be removed before shredding, but documents should be taken out of binders and notebooks to avoid jamming the shredding machines.
As many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen every year, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). It is a well-known fact that identity theft can cost a victim thousands of dollars in bad debt and legal expenses, creating financial and emotional havoc for years.
“We host a Shred Day to help local residents keep their identities safe,” explained Barrett Owen, pastor of National Heights Baptist Church. “It is so important that we offer this service not just for our members but for our whole community. Protection from identification fraud is just one of the ways we seek to follow Jesus’ command to ‘love our neighbors as ourselves.’”
