A Peachtree City man was arrested Tuesday for physically assaulting his stepson during an altercation in late August, police said.

Akiliah W. Crittenden, 36, was charged with one felony count of cruelty to children and one misdemeanor count of battery stemming from the Aug. 28 incident at a home in the Fairfield subdivision.

Crittenden is charged with assaulting the 14-year-old juvenile after attempting to reprimand him for being disrespectful toward his mother during a discussion about basketball, according to the initial police report.

Witnesses told police that after Crittenden put his finger in the juvenile’s face, the child swiped away his stepfather’s hand, which led to Crittenden striking the juvenile in the face, police said.

By the time police arrived on the scene, Crittenden had left to cool down, according to the report. Warrants were issued for his arrest, and that’s what led to him being arrested Tuesday.

A police officer happened to follow Crittenden’s vehicle after it was reported to have left the scene of a previous burglary. When Crittenden was pulled over, Crittenden’s warrants popped up in the state computer system and he was arrested and transported to the Fayette County Jail.
