In the third quarter of last year, Peachtree City residents hit a recycling milestone.
For the first time since the garbage companies were required to offer curbside recycling to every customer in August 2009, the city has eclipsed the 20 percent mark in volume: diverting a total of 428,000 pounds of recyclable materials away from landfills.
The recycling program is monitored by Keep Peachtree City Beautiful, a volunteer agency that not only monitors the data from garbage collectors but also has a program to pick up litter on city roads and cart paths. KPTCB also has rolled out recycling containers at large-scale special events such as the Great Georgia Airshow hosted annually at Falcon Field.
In addition to curbside recycling, Peachtree City residents also have other recycling opportunities including the Rockaway Road recycling center and the McIntosh Trail center in front of the public works building. Both facilities accept #1 and #2 plastics, aluminum cans, cardboard and mixed newspapers and magazines. The Rockaway facility also takes clear, brown and green glass, electronic waste and yard trimmings.
E-Waste Items which are not accepted include CRT TVs or computers, light bulbs, wooden stereo speakers, or anything containing mercury (such as thermostats, car batteries, fluorescent lights, etc.)
The McIntosh Trail recycling center is open 24 hours a day while the Rockaway facility is open Wednesdays from 1-4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
