Sheriffs across Georgia and America are lining up on the issue of gun control. Fayette County is no different, with Sheriff Barry Babb echoing the stance of the recent Ga. Sheriffs’ Association statement supporting the 2nd Amendment and the right of citizens to keep and bear arms.

Babb, along with Griffin Judicial Circuit sheriffs Jimmy Thomas, Wendell Beam and Dan Kilgore, have released a statement saying they unanimously agree with the Ga. Sheriffs’ Association’s stance on gun control.

“The sheriffs took an oath to support the Constitution and will stand by the 2nd Amendment. The sheriffs will aggressively oppose federal or state legislation which infringes upon law abiding citizens’ right to bear arms,” the Ga. Sheriff’s Association press release said.

The statement also noted the agreement to support legislation that would effectively penalize criminals who use firearms in the commission of crimes.

Sheriff’s statewide were absolutely being bombarded by people wanting to know where we stand on gun control, Babb said.

“We’re trying to let people know, including in the Griffin Judicial District, that we’re all on one page,” said Babb. “I’ve had people ask if I’m going to take their guns away. I took an oath to uphold the Constitution and to protect the citizens. And the Constitution includes the 2nd Amendment. I’m in the business to arrest criminals and protect the citizens. We’re there for the citizens.”
