Election Day on Nov. 6 brought out a wealth of voters for the presidential race and for the two constitutional amendments on the ballots. Also featured were the contested races for the District 5 seat on the Coweta County Commission and the District 132 seat for the Georgia House.
In all, there were 55,774 ballots cast in the election. That number represents a voter turnout of 75.48 percent.
In local races, incumbent District 5 Coweta County Commissioner Al Smith (D) defeated newcomer and Republican challenger Hayden Marlowe. Representing the Newnan area, Smith took 53.91 percent of the votes compared to 46.09 for Marlowe.
The other contested race was for the Dist. 132 House seat that includes portions of west Coweta, Meriwether and Troup counties. The race saw Republican Gene King taking 56.45 percent of the votes and Democrat Carl Von Epps receiving 43.55 percent.
Proposed state amendments passed without a hitch. The charter school amendment passed with 65.85 percent of the vote while the multi-year agreements amendment received 67.73 percent after the ballots were counted.
And as for things presidential, Mitt Romney pulled off a local landslide by taking 71.4 percent of the vote compared to 27.3 percent for Pres. Obama.
