The time is quickly approaching for the 7th Annual Ranch on Jesus Yard Sale Aug. 3 and 4 which benefits the children at the orphanage and school in Uganda, East Africa.
Hosted by Carriage Lane Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City, this event has become a tradition for the church family and a favorite with bargain shoppers throughout the area.
Donations for the yard sale can be dropped off in the Fellowship Hall the week of the sale from Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Adult clothing should be limited to in-style, gently used items.
The sale runs Friday, Aug. 3 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Kanzi Craft will have a large assortment of African crafts and jewelry for sale as well.
Tax deductible cash contributions are also welcome and can be mailed to: Pearl Ministries, Inc., 100 Woodsdale Drive, Peachtree City, GA 30269.
Hundreds of man hours in volunteer service go into organizing and pricing the thousands of items donated each year. Over $10,000 was raised at last year’s sale and this year’s promises to be even larger. The proceeds will be used to pay the tuition fees for the orphans at Ranch on Jesus in a country where public schools are not common.
Eight years ago Fayette County resident Jamie Rosser ventured to Uganda with a group from Covenant College and her professor, Dr. Henry Krabbendam, who has a long history with the people of Uganda. While in Africa, Jamie met a young woman, Sarah Kamara, a former orphan herself who was providing street children with a place to sleep and one meal a day.
Upon arriving back in Georgia Jamie told her parents they had to do something to help Sarah and the children and with the aid of their church the first yard sale was held. Carriage Lane Presbyterian continued their support of the orphans through other fundraisers and soon Jamie began a child sponsorship program with many of the church members “adopting” a child.
Upon graduation, Jamie and her husband, Scott Laslo, founded their own non-profit, Pearl Ministries Inc. (www.pearlministries.org). Pearl Ministries partners with individuals, families and churches to help orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, through gospel-centered, holistic development of family and community in partnership with indigenous ministries and churches.
Pearl Ministries is based in Birmingham and its efforts have touched the lives of over 650 Ugandan children. The Laslos make frequent trips to Uganda with their four- year-old daughter.
In 2010, Pearl Ministries officially launched Kanzi® (www.KanziCraft.com), a for-profit initiative which supports the non-profit, the orphanage, and East African artisans with fair market prices for their goods sold internationally. Ornaments 4 Orphans (www.Ornaments4Orphans.org), another initiative of Pearl Ministries, raises funds and awareness by selling handmade African ornaments in churches and businesses that sponsor trees each Christmas.
Carriage Lane Presbyterian Church is at the corner of Carriage Lane and Ga. Highway 54 across from Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Peachtree City.
