Get ready for intersection improvement work and road construction activity across portions of Coweta County beginning May 14. And already underway is railroad maintenance work along the CSX line.
The Coweta County Commission on May 3 voted unanimously to approve a $504,752 contract with R.J. Haynie and Associates for intersection improvements to Macedonia Road and Ga. Highway 16 north of Newnan.
“I’m glad we can move forward with this,” Commissioner Tim Lassetter said of the work that will improve the entire intersection and address issues such as widening and line of sight problems. “This is a dangerous intersection.”
The project is being funded by local sales tax (SPLOST) dollars. The bid by Haynie was the low bid for the project. Other bids received were from Southeastern Site Development at $588,469 and Baldwin Paving at $602,359.
Coweta County will begin several road rehabilitation and shoulder work projects on May 14 and carry a targeted completion period of 90 days. The $2.3 million project was awarded to C.W. Matthews. The work is funded with a combination of local transportation capital funds and a Georgia Local Maintenance Improvement Grant (LMIG), according to county public information officer Patricia Palmer.
Roads to be improved include:
Holbrook Road – from Smokey Road to Old Corinth Road;
Elders Mill Road – three sections from Hwy. 16 to Gordon Road;
Lamar Smith Drive – from Happy Valley Circle to Happy Valley Circle;
Vaughn Road – from Andrew Bailey Road to Ga. Highway 154;
Gordon Road – from Ga. Highway 54 to Al Roberts Road; and
Pete Davis Road – from Ga. Highway 34 to the dead end.
Road improvement projects are not the only activities motorists will see along the county’s traffic thoroughfares. Palmer said CSX Railroad is currently involved in a maintenance project in Coweta County.
“This is a cross-tie replacement project where the old wood ties will be taken out and replaced and then new asphalt placed as well. This type of work requires that the crossing be closed until the project is complete, meaning it can’t be opened in the evening, for example when the crew leaves for the day. So it has to stay closed until it is complete.”
Railroad crews were expected to be in the county by the end of the week.
The affected roads include Walsh Johnson Road, Walt Sanders Road, Posey Road, McCollum-Sharpsburg/Hwy. 154, Bagley Road (both crossings), Johnson Circle, Vine Street and Rugby Lane.
Palmer said the Hwy. 154 crossing is the busiest and will impact citizens the most. Benchmark Consulting is working with CSX to provide information and they have already placed message boards in that area giving notice that the crews are planning to close that crossing beginning Monday, May 14 – 18. All work is dependent on the weather and crew scheduling.
