Yom Ha’Shoah, a service remembering the Holocaust, is an event shared by Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church and Congregation B’Nai Israel of Fayetteville. This year’s ninth annual service will be at Christ Our Shepherd on April 22 at 4 p.m. Music will be provided by a combined choir of both congregations and COS’ Flute Choir.
Writings of 11 authors will be read and 11 candles lit, one for each million persons who died (six million Jews and five million others). Children will read poems by children who survived or witnessed the Holocaust.
Mariella Crea will be the guest speaker. She will tell about her mother, Jacqueline, who at the age of 12 helped a large number of Jews escape from Nazi-occupied France to safety in Switzerland. Crea has spoken at area schools; she has appeared on PBS and the NPR Forum network.
A reception will follow the hour-long service.
