The City of Newnan will celebrate “Georgia Cities Week” April 22 – 28. Georgia Cities Week is sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association and is designed to showcase and celebrate cities and the many services they provide. The City of Newnan will be holding a variety of events throughout the week. The theme of this year’s Georgia Cities Week is “Georgia’s Cities: The Magic of Cities,” highlighting cities contributions in economic development, historic preservation and in providing quality of life for residents and businesses.
New this year the City will present a magic show for children at the Wadsworth Auditorium, Saturday April 28 at 3 p.m. Magician Ken Scott will be on hand to present the Magic of Cities. Ken Scott has over 20 years of experience, performing over 350 shows a year. He has entertained over a million people with his unique cutting edge programs. Ken is a two-time winner of the Greater Atlanta Magician of the year award.
In addition, Ken was also featured on CNN Headline News, where he headlined their segment on A Day of Magic. Ken performs yearly in Hollywood California at The World Famous Magic Castle, which is home to the Academy of Magical Arts. Ken has also performed five times at the White House. Ken has also appeared on ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Video. Tickets are available at the Carnegie. This will be a free admission event but you will need to pick up tickets and reserve a spot.
A special event, “The Magic of Newnan”, will be held at The Carnegie, on Tuesday, April 24, during the lunch hours of 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
The Carnegie is located at 1 LaGrange Street, in historic downtown Newnan.
“The Magic of Newnan” will be kicked off by Mayor Keith Brady. Various departments of the City, such as Public Information, Police, Fire, Planning and Zoning, Keep Newnan
Beautiful, Main Street, and Newnan Center and City commissions, such as Youth Council and Cultural Arts, will be represented.
Several of Newnan’s cultural non-profits are participating. Highlighting their activities, which also provide enrichment and quality of life for the residents of Newnan, are Newnan Coweta Arts Association, the Newnan Coweta Historical Society, Newnan Theatre Company, Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation, New Leaf Community Garden, and Master Gardeners.
To add to the festive mini-expo theme, local businesses are supporting this event. Banking Industry Group, Inc. is sponsoring a fifty dollar cash door prize. Bruster’s Real Ice Cream will be giving away their Italian ice; Classic Café off the Square, their homemade kettle corn and Sugar Magnolia: samples of their pimento cheese sandwich and chicken salad sandwich. Main Street Newnan will have a free drawing for a basket of goodies from participating downtown merchants.
As a part of the celebration for Georgia Cities Week, The City of Newnan with Main Street Newnan will have the Taste of Newnan on Thursday April 19.
On Thursday, April 19, the Taste of Newnan will be held from 5-8 p.m. in downtown on the square. The Taste of Newnan is a tradition for good food, fun and entertainment.
A city inspired art contest will be held in the local high schools. Art students were encouraged to participate in submitting their best entries of art in depicting this year’s theme, ‘the Magic of Cities,’ in celebration for ‘Georgia Cities’ week. The top five art pieces will be displayed at City Hall all week. The winners will be announced at a later date.
The twelfth annual Backyard Picnic for city employees will be held on Friday, April 27 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. behind City Hall. This picnic shows city employees appreciation for all the hard work they do every day to make the city a great place to live.
“We are very proud of our city and the services we provide that make it attractive to residents and visitors,” said Gina Snider, City of Newnan public information officer. “Too often, people are unaware of how cities enhance their quality of life, and we like them to participate in these events and learn more about local government.
