The Senoia City Council voted April 2 to institute a measure designed to provide additional safety for the large crowds that regularly attend venues such as the parades on Memorial Day and at Christmas. The council approved the expenditure of up to $8,000 to purchase crowd control barriers that will line the parade route on Main Street.

City Administrator Richard Ferry in recommending the purchase of the barriers commented that the number of people attending the parades continues to increase while some of the floats are getting larger.

“This got me thinking that we need to do something about this,” Ferry said.

Ferry commented that the use of tape along the parade route would not work because there are not enough people to enforce that type of barrier.

Ferry said he had spoken with two companies supplying steel barriers and had been given a price that ranged from $7,998 to $8,259. Ferry added that he is expecting two additional bids later in the week.

The council after some discussion agreed to set an $8,000 cap for the purchase of the barriers.

Senoia in recent years has experienced a significant increase in the number of people, both residents of the city and those from surrounding areas, attending the various events held throughout the year. Some of those events have drawn well over 2,000 people.

Senoia in the 2010 Census was reported to have a population of 3,307.
