Applicants are being sought for two youth programs hosted this summer by the Peachtree City Police Department: the Junior Police Academy and the Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

The Teen CERT will meet from June 4 through June 8 each day from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The program teaches young adults about disaster preparedness for hazards that may strike their community. Topics include disaster response, fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations.

The Junior Police Academy will meet from July 9 through July 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The program will provide basic information about law enforcement and police activities, with the goal of establishing a positive relationship between youth and law enforcement representatives in the community.

CERT and police academy applicants must be between 13 and 17 years old at the time of registration and a resident of Georgia. The CERT application and waivers must be signed by a parent or legal guardian, and a special meeting for parents and guardians of those admitted into the program will be held prior to the first class.
Likewise, parents are encouraged to attend the first Junior Police Academy class because it will serve as an orientation for both students and parents.

Applicants for both programs will be subjected to a local background check as a condition of acceptance.

The CERT class will be limited to 18 participants, and the Junior Police Academy will be limited to 20 participants. Both are offered free of charge.
