He was born Dec. 21, 1921 in Rebecca, Ga., only child of the late Jesse Lee and Mary Green Travis. The family moved to Fayetteville in 1923.
He served in the U. S. Army in WWII for 3 years, 28 months were on active duty in Italy. After the war he returned to Fayetteville and in 1952 opened up a hardware store in the heart of the city which he operated until he sold it in late 1982.
He was named as the Fayette County Kiwanis Man of the Year in 1961, Fayette County Citizen of the Year in 1968, Business Person of the Year in 1982.
He was a member of the Fayetteville Masonic Lodge #711, the Fayette County Kiwanis for over 55 years, and a lifelong member of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Fellowship-Discipleship Sunday School Class.
He was preceded in death by his step-son, Stan Braxton. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Shelby B. Travis; stepsons, Paul & Adam Braxton and families; step-grandchildren, Eric Braxton, Savannah Braxton, Hayden Braxton, Hannah Braxton and Anna Camille Braxton.
A funeral service will be will be held on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Mark Westmoreland officiating. Mr. Travis will lie in state from 1 – 2 p.m. before the service.
Burial will follow at Fayetteville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mowell Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
