Cafeteria manager brings Colonial Days to life

Learning about the colonial days was a sweet treat this year for fourth grade students at Robert J. Burch Elementary.

Cafeteria manager Alexis Swint invited all fourth grade classes to the cafeteria where she gave a lesson on food preparation in colonial times. She even swapped out her typical hairnet and apron for a period dress and bonnet in order to make the experience more realistic.

Students compared cooking methods of yesteryear with those of the present as they took a guided tour of the school’s kitchen and watched the staff prepare the meal for the day.

The best lessons are those that involve food, so Swint gave the students ingredients and a recipe to make their own individual pumpkin pie as they wrapped up their discussion about the colonial days.
