Martha Joyce Malcom died on Oct. 15, 2011. She was married to Col. (ret.) Ben S. Malcom of Fayetteville, Ga.

Joyce was born July 14, 1932 in Augusta, Ga. She was the daughter of Robert and Rosa Swint. Joyce’s’ mother died of pneumonia six months after Joyce was born. She was raised by her grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Albert Barksdale of Bastonville, Ga.

Joyce graduated from Gibson High School and the Augusta Business College. She then worked as a secretary for the Savannah River Nuclear facility (DuPont).

She married Ben Studdard Malcom in 1955 and they had one son, Ben Thomas Malcom. Their son and his wife Jean live in Monroe, Ga. They have 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

Joyce and Ben traveled the world with the U.S. Army and moved 24 times in the 29 years and lived overseas for six years. Joyce typed Ben’s book, “White Tigers”, which is about Ben’s operation during the Korean war with Special Forces and the CIA. The book is now in the 3rd printing and the history channel did a one hour document film on White Tigers in 2005.

Joyce came from a large family and is survived by sister Barbara Hurst and brothers Ernest and Robert Swint. She also had three half sisters Shirley White, Donna Kay Tottle, Carolyn Gaddis and two half brothers, Edward and Thomas Swint.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Meadows Funeral Home in Monroe, Ga. Interment was at Rest Haven Cemetery in Monroe. The family received friends from 12-2 p.m. at Meadows Funeral Horne – 770-267-9406.
