It has been more than a decade since Mitch Seabaugh was elected to the state Senate seat for District 28. That time came to an end Oct. 3 when Seabaugh resigned his seat when he received an appointment by Gov. Nathan Deal to become the Georgia Deputy State Treasurer.

Gov. Deal on Oct. 3 announced that Seabaugh had been appointed deputy state treasurer and that Steve McCoy, who had served as deputy treasurer, would move into the position as Georgia State Treasurer.

Seabaugh could not be reached for comment on the announcement.

The Office of the State Treasurer is responsible for receipt and disbursement of state funds and lottery funds, management of the state’s cash resources, Georgia Fund 1 and the Georgia Extended Asset Pool, according to state spokesperson Brian Robinson.

Seabaugh was first elected to the state Senate in 2000 and works as a CFO with a Newnan company, said Robinson. He was elected majority whip in his second term and most recently served on the Appropriations, Finance, Judiciary, Regulated Industries, Rules, and Reapportionment and Redistricting committees, Robinson said.

Robinson said Seabaugh previously served as the chairman of the Coweta County Business License and Tax Appeal Board. His past community involvement includes stints on the Coweta County School Board Citizens’ Advisory Council, the executive committee of the Coweta County Republican Party, the 3rd Congressional District Committee and the Georgia Republican Party State Committee.

Seabaugh graduated from Southern Arkansas University with a BBA in accounting. Seabaugh and his wife, Leah, have two children and three grandchildren and reside in Coweta County.

Gov. Deal also issued a writ to set the date for a special election for Senate District 28 on Nov. 8. The election will occur in Coweta and Heard Counties and portions of Carroll and Troup Counties.

Candidate qualifying for the Nov. 8 special election will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 11 and extend through Thursday, Oct. 13.
