2 arrested in F’ville for air conditioning thefts

Fayetteville Police put a dent in the theft of air conditioners Aug. 19 with the arrest of two men involved in the theft of numerous stolen units.

Vernon Nelson, 48, of Atlanta and Ronald Hood, 30, of East Point, were each charged with four counts of theft by taking, according to department spokesman Steve Crawshaw.

Crawshaw said officers on Aug. 19 were conducting surveillance throughout the city when they observed a car drop someone off in the area of Braxton Court and the Magnolia Business Center.

The man later identified as Ronald Hood went behind a business, said Crawshaw, adding that when officers started to approach him the man fled on foot and hid. After a short search officers found Hood, Crawshaw said.

Vernon Nelson was also questioned and arrested when he returned in the vehicle to pick Hood up, Crawshaw said.

Crawshaw said both men admitted to numerous air conditioning thefts, adding that additional charges could be forthcoming based on the results of the ongoing investigation.
