At-large voting is vestige of South’s racist history

Twenty-five years ago I moved into Peachtree City. In looking at the county system of government, I found it out of step with the rest of the country.

I soon found that that the entrenchment of the at-large system for county commissioners was just a carry-over a period of history that is not looked upon as favorable to the South.

Three months ago I moved out of Peachtree City and Fayette County. I am amused at the usual backwater justification that is currently being used to preserve what is basically a racist system for some, and, I thought, a system that prevented Peachtree City from the political representation that it should have had all along at the county level.

It is your battle now. I now live in in a city where we have district council representatives at the city level, and the county. Just like the districts that determine our state and federal representatives.

The way you want to preserve your at-large system is evidence that the tradition of ignorance and intolerance will continue as an enduring tradition.

You know, you really should fall into step with the rest of the world. It just might improve your disposition and reputation.
