Mr. Walter Allie Ponder, Sr., 92, of Fayetteville, formerly of East Point, died on July 8, 2011.

Mr. Ponder proudly served East Point for 25 years, from 1963 – 1988. He served as City Councilman for 20 years and as Mayor for 8 years. He was a longtime member of Fayetteville Christian Church and the Lamplighters Sunday school class. He was a 33 degree Mason and was a 50-year member of the East Point Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Ponder is preceded in death by his parents Allie Ponder and Lucille King Ponder; first wife Mary Frances Ponder; second wife Haydee King Ponder; two brothers Ralph and Leonard Ponder.

He is survived by his wife Martha C. Ponder; sons Walter (Irene) Ponder, Jr. of Fayetteville and Philip O. (Carol) Ponder of Henry Co.; daughter Roxanne (Mark) Rogers of Fayetteville; including five step-children and their families; grandchildren Susan Bright of Fayetteville, Ashley (Andric) Getz of Senoia and Erin (Jim) Turney of Taylorsville, IL; five great-grandchildren; sister Dorothy Mays of Griffin.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Fayetteville Christian Church with Dr. Dan Roberts, Andrew Higle and Dr. Daniel Overdorf officiating. Burial will follow at Westminster, Peachtree City. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
