Cancer Treatment Centers of America has named former CTCA officer Kane Dawson from its Philadelphia facility as CEO of the company’s Newnan hospital expected to open in September 2012.
CTCA announced July 1 that Dawson will serve as president and CEO of the company’s new southeast regional cancer hospital in Newnan. The hospital will be CTCA’s fifth regional destination hospital and the first in the Southeast.
Dawson, 39, is formerly the chief operating officer for CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center in Philadelphia, where he helped open the facility in 2005. Since its opening, CTCA in Philadelphia has served more than 4,500 cancer patients and created more than 700 jobs. Earlier this year, Dawson was recognized as one of Philadelphia’s “Top 40 Under 40” by the Philadelphia Business Journal.
“Kane and our growing southeastern team symbolize our commitment to serve the needs of cancer patients with world-class talent, focused on quality care, efficiency and service excellence,” said Steve Bonner, president and CEO of CTCA. “We look forward to opening our doors to patients and families in the region and providing care based on their individual needs and goals.”
An Indiana native, Dawson has been with CTCA for almost a decade. He started as vice president of oncology and patient services at the organization’s Chicago-area hospital in Zion, Ill. before becoming COO of its Philadelphia hospital, said CTCA spokesperson Kristin Schaner.
Prior to joining CTCA, Dawson served as vice president of business development for Piedmont Healthcare System in Rock Hill, S.C. He has worked with Tenet Healthcare Corp as well as Trimeridian, Inc. and Charter Behavioral Health Systems.
Groundbreaking for the 200,000 square-foot facility in the Ashley Park retail area is scheduled for Aug. 3 with the opening expected in September 2012.
“We are building this hospital to be closer to the patients we serve in the Southeast,” Dawson said. “To succeed, we need to be good community partners in Newnan, Coweta County and throughout Georgia. We are honored to be welcomed into the state and look forward to being a valued member of the community. We plan to bring 50 new residents to Newnan from other CTCA facilities, and to hire another 100 Atlanta-area residents as we prepare to open the new hospital.”
CTCA specializes in complex and advance-stage adult cancer care and provides a comprehensive, fully integrated and personalized treatment experience at hospitals in suburban Chicago, Philadelphia, suburban Phoenix and Tulsa, according to Schaner.
Newnan was in the running with other metro Atlanta communities and was eventually selected in late 2009 to be the site of the state-of-the-art medical facility.
“With more than two-thirds of its patients expected to come from outside the state of Georgia, patients and their families will contribute to the growth and vitality of the local economy,” Schaner said. “CTCA expects the new facility to generate 500 news jobs and $500 million in economic activity over the first five years of operation.”
CTCA has experienced 20 percent annual growth since 2005 and treated 4,500 new patients in Fiscal Year 2010, company officials said.
